The Big Lift Off
Strap in for an unforgettable day out at the RAF Museum Midlands on Saturday 31 May.
This isn’t just a day out – it’s the launch pad to something much bigger. The RAF Museum is embarking on £28 million transformation of our Midlands site, introducing a new exhibition that explores space and cyber, a dedicated learning centre, and more green areas for visitors to enjoy. Thanks to generous funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and other funders, we are close to making this transformation a reality—but we need your help to get over the finish line.
As part of this exciting programme, we are undertaking a monumental task—relocating our stored collection to a new, purpose-built Collections Hub at the RAF Museum Midlands and opening it up to visitors for the first time.
Between now and 2027, our dedicated team at MOD Stafford are preparing to move more than 50,000 objects. It’s a monumental task, with thousands of boxes being packed up, and that’s where The Crate Escape comes in.
Too excited by the launch, some of our objects and boxes are hatching a daring escape from their store at MOD Stafford. They will be making their way to the Museum for the Big Lift Off!
We have recruited a team of people to make sure they arrive safely to the Museum.
From a jaw-dropping skydiver and an awe-inspiring flypast to teams of walkers and vintage vehicles come and discover the amazing ways our objects will be travelling to the Museum.
You will also be able to enjoy
· Music from the Pipes and Drums, and our 1940s crooner Matt Hayes.
· Look to the skies for a majestic Lancaster flypast by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight
· Climb aboard the legendary Chinook ‘Bravo November’ that will become part of our new exhibitions – a rare experience not to be missed! (small donation will apply)
Family Activities – including the box game with mystery prizes, rocket cars and a photo booth and that’s just the beginning.
Come and discover how you can take part in the Crate Escape!
The Museum will open for you to explore 80+ historic aircraft across our iconic hangars, step into the cockpit in a flight simulator, and dive into interactive exhibitions telling incredible RAF stories of bravery, engineering genius, and world-changing events.
